Amazon recently announced a 20 million investment to help protect the watershed, joining forces with the Water Resilience Coalition and The Climate Pledge to launch the Colorado River Basin Collaborative.
The Colorado River currently supplies water to nearly 40 million people and supports more than 5 million acres of farmland. Facing reduced annual river flows from historic droughts, the new collaborative aims to fund conservation projects including urban leak detection, canal lining, groundwater recharge, and irrigation efficiency.
Early projects focus on leaks and agriculture
The initiative is already making an impact, securing more than 33 million in corporate commitments with an ultimate goal of raising 100 million. Amazon is currently supporting two initial projects, including a 2.2 million commitment over three years with the Municipal Water District of Orange County. This funding will expand vital leak detection and repair services to communities that might lack the resources to conduct the work independently.
Additionally, agricultural technology company Arable is receiving backing to improve irrigation efficiency on tribal farmland in the Lower Colorado River Basin. Using special sensors, farmers receive real-time data to optimize crop watering, significantly reducing the draw from Lake Mead.
